MARLAND MIESKA
Feb. 3, 1928 -- Nov. 10, 2006
From the DIABLOS SOFTBALL TEAM
Fellow softball players gathered on March 4, 2007 to honor the memory of a former team player and good friend.
Marland was one of a kind and best described as a ":character". Anytime or place he could attract a crowd and keep them entertained with his wit and one liners.
Marland never played ball in his youth as he was busy tending the family farm. Arriving in ViewPoint he discovered softball, and jumped in with both feet. Whether it was catching or batting, he had his own style of playing. His hitting looked more like a golfer hitting a nine iron, but it worked quite well. He always played right field and always stood in the same spot. Even today, there's a bare spot of dead grass where he always stood.
Marland was hard of hearing, so calling to him didn't work and waving your arms never helped to move him. Some of the old players still use his favorite saying which was " Winning isn't everything, but losing sucks".
He had many interests. First came the family and tons of friends. Besides ball there was bowling, dancing, cards and keeping his car free of dust. He was also known to play the one arm bandits, one nickel at a time--never using the spin button, as it ate the coins too fast--he always pulled the handle.
So in closing, my friend, "We all miss you"
Ed and the team
