Train derailed in Northfield today. It was leaking some chemicals but say they have it contained. I sure hope so. This photo is shot from the bridge by the dairy queen out on hiway 3.

Hi!
I have a new great-grandbaby. Jude William Mieska was born this morning, March 30, 2008 to Jeremiah & Gina. I am so happy for them. I'm sure Luke & Owen will take good care of him. He is a healthy baby and we are very thankful for that.
Things are slowing down here. Most of the activities are over with for the season. Ed & Joan Schmidt had me over on Tuesday afternoon for a cocktail party. Wednesday Jim & Eve Boyd had a few of the neighbors over for a social hour.
Thursday the park had a "Going Away" Party for all the volunteers. They had special mention for anyone who was over "90" years of age and also for those of us who had been in the park for 20 years or more. I've been here 21 years!! Doesn't seem possible.
Friday Darrell & Julie Wise had a cocktail party and that evening I was invited to Ed & Joan's for fish dinner.
It sounds like all I do is go to cocktail parties! That's good. Lots of folks wait until it is just about time to leave for the summer to do the entertaining so it gets to be lots of them at the end of the season. What better way to spend a few hours?
Tomorrow morning I have an appointment to have my car serviced. That means an oil change and they include rotating the tires for the same price. It's the first time I've had to do that since I bought the car. It has served me well. Oh yes--I did have a low right front tire a week ago so Ed went with me to a Tires Plus and they put a "boot" in it. I had picked up a staple. What would I do without good friends?

Hey--I've run out of all the different salutations so will go with this!
It was a busy week again. I forgot to tell you last week that on Saturday, a week ago, Ed, Norine, Tony , Jean and I took a ride up to Tortilla Flat to look at all the beautiful wild flowers that are blooming right now. It was a great ride and we enjoyed the company. Yes, it is early for the flowers to be blooming but I guess it's because of all the rain we've had this winter.
Sunday was church and a quiet day at home. Monday I watched the annual St. Patrick's Day parade here in our park. Besides all the colorful golf carts decorated, there were all the clubs advertising their accomplishments. About 50 old classic cars rounded out the parade. It was pretty good for a half hour of entertainment!! That evening I was invited to a corn beef and cabbage party hosted by Marland's "brother" !!!
That's an whole other story!!
Tuesday I worked the dinner show. Wednesday I attended another Broadway Palms dinner show where we watched the production of "Hello Dolly". If you remember my writing about the show I attended in January called "Anything Goes". This was every bit as good. I've already put my name in for 2 shows next year. They are "The Best Little Whore House In Texas" and "Singing In The Rain".
Thursday I went to Maundy Thursday services at church in the morning and ushered at a concert in the evening. Friday evening it was Good Friday services at church.
A few weeks ago I was introduced to a widow who had lost her husband last October. She was looking for someone to go out to dinner with occasionally. We finally found time to do that on Saturday evening and had a really good visit. She leaves for home in another week but we hope to do this when we both return next fall.
We realized that we both have quite a bit in common. We'll see what happens.
This morning was Easter Sunday service and what a glorious feeling to be surrounded by fellow believers!!
This afternoon I enjoyed dinner with Ed & Norine, Dale & Marlene, Ed & Joan. I roasted the turkey( Needed to get it out of the freezer before everyone leaves) and made the dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy and the rest of the people furnished the rest of the meal. We hjad a nice time.
It's 8 p.m. and I'm ready for bed. I hope your Easter was a pleasant one.
P.S. Thanks for the calls and emails from several of my grandchildren.

Mom's blog 2.16.08
Hi to family and friends,
Another week has gone by---I've been busy again.
Sunday evening last week, Scott & Ami just wanted to sit on the deck in the evening and have a light supper. We scouted out a place like one they had enjoyed in San Diego. In--N--Out it was called. We picked up burgers and fries and had a deck meal. They had both been at the pool all afternoon so they were tired.
Monday morning they headed to the pool again for a couple of hours and then it was time to pack their bags and we left for the airport by 1:30. Scott drove over but I managed to find my way home again all alone through my tears. It was such a great weekend and I really enjoyed their time with me but it is always hard to say good-bye. They were delayed at this airport so they got home late but I think they were glad they came.
On my way home from the airport, I stopped for an hour at Doris & Arden Caldwell's and played a quick hand of 3 handed pinochle. Then I stopped and visited my former neighbor, Eileen, who is now in the nursing home. She was very glad to see me so that made me feel good.
Tuesday evening I took tickets at the dinner show. Wednesday I went to Lenten services and then visited Charley & Peggy Fleming. They are old friends from the Amboy area and Marland helped him farm a short while when we lived at the lake.
Thursday we had our annual street party. Last year it was at the same time that the Harley riders were here for a week so several of the people asked me when they were coming down again. They remembered that as they were coming back into the park after their daily ride, the neighbors all called out "Here come LaVerne's kids". They mentioned again how much they enjoyed watching all of them and how polite they were. They liked the bark of the bikes!! That evening, I ushered at another concert. It was a couple who sing on Broadway and they had wonderful voices. really enjoyed it.
Friday Jim & Corky Stenstrom, friends from Northfield, called me and came over to visit. I went with them to a concert at Monti Vista. Patti Paige was the entertainer---she is 81 years old and still has a marvelous voice. She is still recording so you know hew voice is still good.
Saturday I was home most of the day. I invited Clarence, my 95 year old neighbor, over for supper. He appreciates a home cooked meal once in awhile and it forces me to cook a decent meal occasionally.
Today I attended church. It is cloudy and cool with a threat of rain so it's a day to stay indoors and read.

Today is Owen's 4th birthday. He spend the day at Henry Doorly Zoo with 11 friends and a private tour of the jungle with a zookeeper! Much fun was had by all!

Grandma's Birthday

We gathered once again at Southdale to celebrate what would have been Grandma Mieska's 108th birthday. We reminisced about family memories and stories about grandma. Phyllis brought some great old photos and we all had a nice time.
Prior to the lunch we stopped by Phyllis and Bud's place and had a tour. Phyllis showed us some of the projects she's been working on including a great shell collection and frames she decorated using the shells. We had a nice visit and took away some treasures from Phyllis. We can't say what they were yet as they might become gifts. We did come away with a box of old letters from Grandma and others that we will read and return to Phyllis. It was a fun day.

What a week I'm having!!
Sunday I went to church--
Monday Lorn & Kitty Schneeberger came to visit. We had a really nice visit, as usual. We had pie and coffee at 2 p.m. and then went to our local restaurant here in the park, for a sandwich in the late afternoon. If your ears were ringing, then we were probably talking about you!!! Not to worry, there would be nothing bad to say.
Tuesday, Gary & Aline Kranz and Larry & Sara Walters came by and took me for buffalo wings at The Vine.
Wednesday I attended Lenten services at church and that evening I enjoyed the Choraliers singing concert in the park. Thursday The Good Time Singers entertained us with their music. All was good.
Friday morning I picked up Scott & Ami Ketcher at the airport and we've been having a good time ever since. For those of you who don't know, Scott is Bonnie's son and Ami is his better half! They are truly suited to each other. We tried to go to the Cubs spring training game in the afternoon, but it was "sold out" and we couldn't even find a parking place within 5 miles of the stadium. We thought we could at least have gotten a closer look at the stadium but no such luck. That evening we just sat around the house cause they had jet lag so went to bed early.
Saturday I got up early and went around the park with Norine to check out all the yard sales. Bought a couple of pictures for my bedroom and a purple T shirt to wear when I help serve the Tuesday night dinner show next week. The "Red Hat Ladies" are serving and I'm not one of them but was asked to help serve anyway. Wow! Aren't you glad I shared this information with you!!! It's SO important! Scott & Ami spent ALL afternoon at the pool and both got a lot of sun-Ami more than Scott.
Saturday evening we went to The Outback restaurant. We waited an hour to be seated but the wait was okay. When we got to our table, sitting right next to us were Denny & Renae Stock. Denny is my nephew. I hadn't seen them down here all winter so we had a good visit. After dinner, I left them and went home and they got together with a friend of both of theirs--this guy worked with them when they worked at "Billys" He now lives down here so they had arranged to see him.
Today is Sunday--Ami & Scott cooked breakfast for me and we enjoyed it sitting out on the deck in 80 degree temperature!! Eat your hearts out! This afternoon they are at the pool and I'm writing this.
For those of you who remember the days at the lake---I had a call this morning that Archie Bennett passed away Friday evening. Sharon called me to let me know.
Tomorrow, I take them to the airport, but not until 1:30, so they will have time for one more outing at the pool.
They have really taken care of my lonesomeness for a little while anyway and I've enjoyed every minute of their visit.

News from Mom 3.2.08
This week's news!!
Hello Everyone,
This is the most uneventful week I've experienced all winter. Maybe because I have been under the weather. Nothing serious--I thought I was coming down with a cold so I slugged down the Airbourne for several days. It didn't work this time(it had worked for me when I was home at Christmas time). It caught up with me on Wednesday so I went to bed in the afternoon and slept for 2 hours. According to the Arizona paper, it turns out I must have an allergy problem. I don't have a sore throat but just lots of phlegm in my nose and throat. It's Sunday now and I'm feeling better but not up to par. The smog in the valley doesn't help matters any.
Before I felt tough, I attended the band concert on Sunday evening and on Monday, I entertained Ed & Norine and Mic & Harriett. I fixed a beef roast--always have good luck with that.
Tuesday I visited Gary & Aline Kranz in the afternoon and that evening I went to the Tuesday night dinner show. For the first time this year, I was a guest and didn't have to work so it was a treat. The New Dawn Singers were the entertainment and they were excellent. There was a little excitement during the show---a gentleman collapsed and the rescue squad was called. In a park with all these seniors, it's not that uncommon!!
Wednesday I went to Lenten services in the morning and then to bed!!
Thursday I was scheduled to usher for the concert so I went but did not stay long. I've stayed close to home since then and I'm hoping that this next week I'll be okay.
I'm excited for Friday--Scott & Ami are arriving and will spend the long weekend with me. I'll have lots to tell you next week. The weather is supposed to be very warm so they will have lots of sun to enjoy and I know they will spend plenty of time at the pool. Eat your hearts out all you people back home!!! Maybe this will encourage the rest of you to think about a vacation down here with me next year.
