Annie's got the recipe for Grandma's caramel corn. I have the recipe for Aunt Tillie's salve. This is a real down home treatment for whatever ails you. From Rynda:
1 pound sheep tallow
1 pound beeswax
1 pound rosin
1-1/4 pound boiled (not raw) linseed oil
2 teaspoons carbolic acid
Melt first four ingredients together but do not let it get too hot. Then add carbolic acid (it will foam up) and mix well. Pour in salve boxes (got some of those around, don't you?) or any other handy container.
I need to verify who Aunt Tillie actually was. I think it was Mathilda Luedtke Bergemann, so an aunt of Grandma Mieska's on her mother's side. The loom that my mother had in the porch in the Northfield house had belonged to Aunt Tillie. It went back to one of her descendents when my folks left Northfield.

Mesa Update
Hi from Mesa,
It's been a cool winter but not anymore!! My outside thermometer reads 89 degrees. It's pretty warm but I guess we'd better not complain cause it's what we've been waiting for. I turned on my air conditioner and it didn't start!!
Oh boy! What to do now. I tapped on the control--nothing happened--went outside and stood and looked at the thing--I didn't have a clue what to do!! Walked around outside a little while and wondered what could possibly happen to me next, cause for the last week I had had major plumbing problems.Bathroom sink was slower than SLOW, clapper in the stool broke, then the next day the kitchen sink started leaking. Thank goodness for GOOD friends. Ed came over and fixed the kitchen sink, Ron put a new stopper in the bathroom sink and another Ron fixed the clapper in the stool. As a result, I've made 3 cocoanut cream pies!! Not too bad a trade-off would you say? Well by the time I came in the house after wondering what to do about the air, I realized the motor had started and COOL air was flowing. Guess my luck has changed.
Last Monday, I attended a Fashion show luncheon in the park. Good food and nice fashions. It was sponsored by Fashion Bug. We even have a store like that in Northfield. I never seem to be able to find anything in that store, but the models here had some really neat clothes.
Tuesday was a cocktail party at Dale & Marlene Hannah's. Friday was another party at Ed & Norine Maier's. It's getting toward the end of the season so lots of folks are trying to squeeze in their entertaining. My party is scheduled for March 23. That will be the members of Marland's softball team and spouses. They still include me in their parties and I am very grateful.
Thursday afternoon Fred & Liz Neff from Bemidji stopped by for a couple of hours. We had a great visit even though it was short. They are down here for golfing and visitinig several friends in the area.
Monday, Kitty & Lorn Schneeberger spent a few hours with me. We went out to lunch and then had coffee here cause we weren't done visiting. I always have lots of questions about what is going on in Elbow Lake and they know the answers.
Wednesday was the annual Big Block Party for all the residents. It's held outdoors by the gazebo with live music, dancing and food. HUGE crowd.
I ushered at a concert Thursday night and Saturday was the semi annual yard sale in the park. Norine and I always get up and out early to find all the bargains!! This year--not so much. Oh well, there's always next year.
Church this morning and then I watched the final ball games of the season here in the park this afternoon.
Milt & Gloria Berg (friends from Northfield) are coming for lunch this Wednesday. They only spend the month of March here in the Valley but always find time to come visit me. They also give me a standing invitation to haul a box of things that won't fit in my luggage back to Northfield for me for which I am very grateful. What does one do without friends? I am blessed.
I will be home in 24 days--but who's counting? This may be the last blog for awhile, but who knows--maybe something exciting will happen before that time!! Stay tuned.

Update from Mom
Hi from Cool Arizona,
Yes, it's cool here again. The sun is shining now, but when we came out of church this morning at 10:30, it was snowing!! It looked like small hail stones but they melted as soon as they hit the ground. It's 1 p.m. now and still only 50 degrees. That sounds pretty warm to you people in Minnesota and Iowa, but down here, it is cool!
Barb and Gene Schuler went with me to church this morning and then they took me out to lunch. We went to Coco's and had good food and good visiting. They have been in the Valley for the month of February and leave for their home in Detroit tomorrow. Barb is my sisters daughter and very dear to me--Gene is special- he is so much like Marland that he could have been our son. I will miss them. I'm praying for a safe trip home for them.
Shirley and I attended an off broadway play, "The Sound of Music" last Sunday. It was very enjoyable and a good way to spend my birthday. I had phone calls and skypes and facebook messages from family and friends. It was almost like being home, but not quite!
Tuesday night dinner show was a Tribute to Johnny Cash. The fellow did a really good job and all 750 people in attendance enjoyed it. Wow!
I helped serve at a 50th wedding anniversary party and ushered at a not so great concert this week. This next week looks to be a bit boring but who knows what will happen!
If you are reading this blog, then you know that Sue & Julie are inviting any and all of us to spend our Sunday night suppers at their lake place. I can hardly wait!! It will be great to watch all the little ones spread their wings and enjoy the water. The grownups can enjoy all the fun also!

Summer Fun
Yes, it's below zero and snowing, BUT, we're already thinking about summer at "the lake". Julie and I agreed that it would be fun to host the Family Sunday Suppers at our house this summer. Starting mid May and running until it's too cold to swim, we'll host the Sunday gatherings. The day can start anytime after noon (when we get home from church) and go through supper. You can show up anytime you want. There will be swimming, boating, sun bathing and eating. Counting down to SUMMER....

Update from Mom
Hi!
Yes, the scene just below this blog is what greeted Steve & Peggy and her parents when they arrived at Viewpoint on Thursday morning last week. They flew in Wednesday but the next morning it was 29 degrees!! Steve went up to the Center and took this picture and sent it to Sue. I can't ever remember it being that cold down here in the 23 years I've been in this park!!
Thursday morning we drove up to Sedona and knew it would be colder up there so we were dressed for it. We did lots of sightseeing and it is still as awesome as it has always been. Peggy's parents had not been there before so they were thoroughly impressed. We met up with Peggy's cousin and his friend and did the tour. We did the gallery thing and also Tlaquepaque(tal-lock-a-pak-e). My sister-in-law Florence would appreciate this place cause it's where she and Arnold bought beautiful jewelry made by artists when they used to spend their winters in Mesa. We spent all day Friday there and then Saturday morning we drove up to the Grand Canyon. Wow! Talk about AWESOME! I had been ther eabout 13 years before and was still breathtaking. Late that afternoon, we drove to Flagstaff and spent the night there. We drove back to Mesa Sunday morning.
Steve never really relaxes so Sunday afternoon, he started in ripping my deck steps apart. It was a job on my "to do" list and it needed more than I had anticipated. Steve & Peggy went to Lowe's for supplies but couldn't find a match for the 15 year old carpet!! Surprise, surprise. Why wouldn't they still have a match? It took a trip to 2 other stores before we could find something that would work. It didn't match but -good enough. Steve also touched up the marks on the ceiling from a leaky roof in the liviing room, washed my car and cleaned the inside, including the windows, and a few other jobs I can't remember. Peggy took over the kitchen--I don't think I did much while they were here. I didn't even wash any dishes. It was wonderful to have all of them here. I took them to the airport Wednesday morning. Now it's back to reality.
Wednesday evening I went to dinner with my 2 nieces, Vicki & Herb Hobbs, and Barbara & Gene Schuler, who are in the area visiting their father, Wally & Ruth Holt. Wally & Ruth were along for dinner. I hope to see them again before they leave.

It is one of the highlights of the year that Marland always looked forward to so I wanted to attend. They served 960 people--lots of folks who do not play softball like to attend. There is a dance included but I usually have to leave when the music starts--too many memories.
This next week looks like a busy one according to the calendar and that is good. Oh! I almost forgot the most important part--Andrew & Brody skyped me during the week!! What a thrill to see their happy faces!

A very important post script: I menstioned that Peggy took over the kitchen but I failed to give credit to Steve for all the cooking he did on the grill. I had marinated thick pork chops for the evening they came and Steve did a great job on them. Then when we returned from Flagstaff we marinated Chuck Eye steaks. I had never heard of that cut before but Peggy knew about them. We found them at Fry's (grocery store) and Peggy marinated them in a special sauce that was delicious-Steve grilled them and they were great. The last evening we marinated chicken breasts and they were grilled and pretty darn good. We ate well and now I am into leftovers and enjoying them. Just thought you needed to know all this. LaVerne

Update from mom
Hi from Arizona,
Sue mentioned it to me and then I read the Comments from the Mieska blog and it seems that some of my grandchildren have missed the weekly letter that I used to send. As a matter of fact, I haven't written one since April of 2009!! I didn't think anyone even had time to read it or care about the menial jottings I was putting down.
My life is pretty hum drum but if you want to read it, then I guess I can take the time to write it.
Her goes: Most of you know that Sue flew down with me when I came in October. That was one of the best things that ever happened to me. She took charge, rented a car and got us to the park. Wow! We proceeded to open up the place and clean the dust and dirt from the summer. I finally begged her to stop cleaning but she didn't--I was getting tired. We did take some time to go to the pool each day and she left me on Monday morning to go to her immediate job in Casa Grande. I rested!! She came back every third week to spend the weekend with me and then proceed to her job in Casa Grande. This was throughout October, November and December. She has finished her work in Casa Grande so now I've been alone.
I'm still walking every day and doing aerobics 3 times a week. I haven't been to the pool since before Christmas, but the weather is now starting to make that a comfortable thing to do. I'm volunteering at the dinner show weekly and since the first of January, I usher at the concerts twice a month.
I have 3 widow friends that I spend time with. We go out to lunch occasionally and went to the movie "The King's
Speech". Very, very good.
Of course, I still manage to get invited to cocktail parties on occasion!! I have my golf cart that gets me to and from safely! This last week I entertained 2 couples for cocktails AND dinner.
This Wednesday, I'm looking forward, with great anticipation, to a visit from Steve & Peggy and Peggy's parents. I will pick them up at the airport (my first time of driving there alone) and Steve will get us back to Viewpoint. I will have much more to tell you about the things we are planning to do the next time I write. I have a list of "to do" jobs for Steve which I have already gotten his permission that he will do while they are here. I don't feel too guilty cause Steve likes to be busy.
I will not be writing next week, but the week, after cause I will not have access to my computer.
That's it for this time. P.S. I'm really enjoying skyping and being able to see the "greats" is a real bonus. I also enjoy the videos from facebook, too.
