Grandpa Fred

Rynda sent me a photo of Grandpa Fred with his parents, and siblings. He is the one in the back on the left side. Notice the curtains/shades in the background. This family was clearly low income. Who knows the names of the sibllings? I don't.

Wow - how crazy is it that Grandpa Fred looks so much like Fred Neff? The resembalance is remarkable.
No ideas on the siblings names....

I love a good historical mystery. This kind of thing fascinates me, especially when family history is involved. Do I understand correctly that Great Grandpa was adopted? I heard that many years ago.

Sisters Mary and Gustie..brother Louie. Sister Mary died fairly young,(slightly crazy) Gustie lived a long life and had 9-10 children (lived in Morris). I don't think Louie married. He used to visit at Grandma's and always smelled like stale cigars...always chewed the stub. I believe Gpa was adopted and then the couple had biological children...correct? Bonnie

This is what I've got: Grandpa's siblings were Ludwig (Louie) born in 1894, Augusta (Gustie) born about 1900, Marie (Mary) born in 1905. Gpa was born in 1891. There was another daughter, Gretchen born in 1890. I think she must have died as an infant or young child since she's not in the photo. Perhaps her death was one reason that Gpa was given to the Mieskas by the doctor (as the story goes).

Parents were Ludwig and Augusta. He was born in 1853 and died in 1910. She was born in 1864 and died in 1849. Mom said that Sylvia, one of Gustie's daughters said that Ludwig (the father) died not too long after this picture was taken. Mom said she only remembers visiting Augusta (the mother) once and that our Gma Mieska was angry about the visit because the house had bedbugs. Son Louie and Mary didn't marry or have children. Mary spent several years hospitalized for some mental illness. She died in 1964.

We're coming up on son Louie's birthday next Wednesday. Wonder if anyone will think of him.

Spelling of names wasn't all that precise back in the day. But if anyone is taking notes from this link -- I'd guess mother Augusta's middle name was Wilhelmina (think the female version of Wilhelm) not Wilhamina.

I think Steve looks more like Grandpa than Fred does. Maybe we need to do some side-to-side photo comparisons!

Merry Christmas to all!!

So, just checked the link I entered. Doesn't work quite right. It will take you to the MN Historical Society death certificate index not to the search results page. To get there enter Mieska in the last name box and you'll get the group.
